 The Howrah Bridge is a reasonable cantilever span over the Hooghly River in West Bengal, India. Dispatched in 1943,[9][11] the scaffold was initially named the New Howrah Bridge, since it supplanted a barge span at a similar area connecting the urban communities of Howrah and Kolkata (Calcutta). On 14 June 1965, it was renamed Rabindra Setu after the incomparable Bengali artist Rabindranath Tagore, who was the main Indian and Asian Nobel laureate.[11] It is still famously known as the Howrah Bridge.

The scaffold is one of four on the Hooghly River and is a well known image of Kolkata and West Bengal. Different extensions are the Vidyasagar Setu (prevalently called the Second Hooghly Bridge), the Vivekananda Setu and the moderately new Nivedita Setu. It faces the hardships of the Bay of Bengal district, conveying an everyday traffic of roughly 100,000 vehicles[12] and conceivably more than 150,000 pedestrians,[10] effectively making it the most active cantilever span in the world.[13] The third-longest cantilever span at the hour of its construction,[14] the Howrah Bridge is presently the 6th longest scaffold of its sort in the world.[15]
